VERBS VERBS VERBS VERBS! I love action words! Of VERBS VERBS VERBS VERBS!
I love action words! Often in play we tend to use a lot of nouns, and I can see why, it’s easy to label what we see “dinosaur, train, cup, book, ball” but it is just as important to use verbs in your play.
I find a lot of clients find verbs a much harder concept to grasp, perhaps as they can’t touch and feel the verb like they can with a noun but verbs are a crucial part to developing sentence structures so we need to make them an important part of our play.
I have provided some ideas for toys you may have in your home so that next time you sit down to play with your kids perhaps try modelling some verbs!

How do you teach letter recognition? For many of How do you teach letter recognition?
For many of the kiddos that I work with teaching the alphabet, or letters in isolation (a is for apple) isn’t the best way to teach letter recognition. Instead teaching letter recognition within meaningful words, such as their name, Mum, Dad etc ends up being a much more engaging and successful way to teach letter recognition.
This is a little board I’ve put together for a client who also has CVI (however I am using photos of myself and husband to demonstrate how it works), we are not only teaching letter recognition but comprehension of what a group of letters (a word) means.

Play time is so important, but it is often not per Play time is so important, but it is often not perceived as a learning opportunity however so many areas can be targeted within one play experience;
🗣 Expressive Language - protosounds (brmmmm), language concepts (fast/slow, stop/go), verbs (drive, turn, park, fly, walk, move, do), nouns (car, helicopter, mountains, road, sign)
👂🏻 Receptive Language - following instructions, understanding a story line/play script
🚗 Pretend Play - car races, cars off to the mechanics, trucks digging in the mountains
🚦Symbolic Play - the coffee trays as mountains, the toilet rolls as speed bumps
✏️ Organising and Planning the play scene
👥 Social Skills - turning taking, negotiating, conversation skills, sharing
💡 Ideation and imagination
👀 Attention, focus and engagement
🛑 Road safety and rules such as stop signs, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings
So whether in therapy or at home with your kiddos I encourage everyone to get involved in play time, it’ll do wonders!

Trust the signs, trust your gut and ask ‘Are you Trust the signs, trust your gut and ask ‘Are you ok?’
Today is R U OK? DAY and after what 2020 has thrown at us it is more important than ever to check in with everyone.
“You don’t need to have all the answers. Just letting that person know that you care and that they are worthy of being cared about is sometimes enough” - Lisa Nichols.
Use these four steps and have that conversation today that could change a life:
1️⃣ Ask R U OK?
2️⃣ Listen (often this is hard as we don’t expect someone to say they are not ok as we are so used to “fine” but really take the time to listen)
3️⃣ Encourage action (there are so many terrific services @ruokday @beyondblueofficial @headspace_aus @lifelineaustralia)
4️⃣ Check in (remember it’s not just about today, check in with people all year round)

I 💚 MAGNETS!!! They are not only a favourite t I 💚 MAGNETS!!!
They are not only a favourite tool for therapy but such a great tool to use in day to day life. These are just a few ways you could use magnets in your home; AAC core word boards, choice boards, sight words, spelling and pretend play.
The kitchen is the hub of many households, so it’s any easy way to incorporate some learning into your busy schedule. Asking your child to spell some words on the fridge while you pack their lunchbox, creating more opportunities for AAC core word modelling or creating a magical scene with your kids while you’re multitasking. I highly recommend including magnets into your daily life!
